Nowadays exchange is done over the internet, so you might have advanced web-based exchange application. Microsoft Business Solutions Great Plains could play the role of the backend: accounting, sales and purchasing ordering, backordering, allocation, collection. In this case we expect tight integration between your exchange application and Great Plains. In this small article we consider industry / market niche specifics and the ways to realize these requirements:

• Exchange Transaction. Exchange transaction usually has two parts: Sales and Purchasing. This transaction should be translated into Great Plains as Sales Order in Sales Order Processing (SOP) and Purchase Order in Purchase Order Processing (POP). Assuming that you have web developers and C#, VB.Net programmers, you can deploy eConnect Distribution – this is Software Development Kit with sample codes, you can create or modify Great Plains objects, such as Sales Order, Customer record, Purchase Order, Vendor record. One warning about eConnect – it is designed based on general ERP application principles: you can create work transaction only – you can not post transaction, this is left for the Great Plains user

Billings 3: Slick Time-Tracking and Invoicing for Mac

October 25th, 2008

For the most part, the applications we cover on WWD are web applications. But every once in a while a desktop application comes along that’s worth consideration by dedicated web workers. Billings 3, the latest release of this time-tracking and invoicing application, is one such. If you’re using a Mac to do your work, and you need to track your time and create your own invoices, it’s definitely worth a look.

Certainly there are plenty of good web applications for this sort of thing, including FreshBooks, Zoho Invoice, Blinksale, Cashboard, and Harvest. But some people just don’t want to share their financial details over the web, no matter how much they trust a service - or they may want more flexibility and customization than most of the web applications provide.

Billings delivers well. It provides a variety of ways to enter time, and then helps you create great-looking invoices (with a whole pile of built-in templates and the ability to create your own). It also offers constant monitoring of your cashflow position, and lets you send statements or past due notices to slow-to-pay clients with just a few clicks.

Mashup (hybrid web application): new generation of Web-based applications

October 24th, 2008

Mashups are new and exciting aspects of Web 2.0. As is often the case with new technologies or approaches the industry often gets caught up in promoting the value proposition of what’s emerging. The hype often muddies the water between the value of what can be created with the new technology and the value of what exists today. With mashups, it’s often unclear to IT professionals how their existing Web applications might be different from the proposed innovative approach to mashing-up data with a browser.

One of the first questions that customers often ask is “What’s the difference between a mashup and the Web applications that we currently use in our enterprise today?” The difference has little to do with technology or the integration of systems. Instead, it reflects the ease with which the application can be created by users, how the application is intended to be used, and the lack of nonfunctional requirements (for example, reliability, availability, and performance) that need to be addressed after the mashup or Web application is deployed.
